Target share is a receiver’s targets divided by his team’s total pass attempts. Nine targets in a game where the offense threw 36 times is a target share of 9 ÷ 36 = 25%. That one number tells you more about a pass-catcher’s fantasy value than his catches, his yards, or anything a highlight package will show you.
Targets are the currency of receiving production. A catch requires a target. Yards require a catch. Touchdowns mostly require both. Everything a receiver scores traces back to the ball being thrown at him, and target share measures how often his offense chooses to do that.
Why targets, not catches
Catches and yards are joint products of the receiver, the quarterback, the coverage, and luck. Targets are almost entirely a decision — a play-caller designs the concept, a quarterback works a progression, and a receiver’s position in that progression is set before the ball is snapped.
Decisions repeat. Outcomes do not. That is the whole reason usage analysis works, and it is the same logic behind starting with snap share before anything else.
Practically: a receiver who saw 10 targets and caught 3 for 21 yards had a good week hidden inside a bad box score. A receiver who saw 3 targets and caught all 3 for 74 yards and a score had a lucky week wearing a good box score. Next week, the first one is more likely to produce.
Target share tiers
These are rules of thumb in wide circulation, not thresholds with any magic to them. Use them to sort players into rough buckets and then look at the details.

The bands shift by position. A tight end at 20% is doing something a wide receiver at 20% is not, because tight ends compete for targets from a smaller pool of routes. Judge a tight end’s share against other tight ends.
Air yards and aDOT
Air yards are the distance a target travels past the line of scrimmage, measured at the catch point or the point where the ball hits the ground. They are credited on every target, complete or not — a 40-yard incompletion is 40 air yards.
That is the useful part. Air yards record what the offense tried to do, unfiltered by whether it worked. A receiver’s air yards share is his air yards divided by the team’s total, and it captures something target share misses: whether his targets are the valuable kind.
aDOT — average depth of target — is simply air yards ÷ targets. A receiver with 100 air yards on 8 targets has an aDOT of 12.5.

Neither end is better. A deep threat and a possession receiver with identical target shares are different assets: one has a higher week-to-week floor, the other a higher ceiling and more zeroes.
WOPR: combining the two
WOPR (weighted opportunity rating) exists because target share and air yards share each capture half the picture. It was created by analyst Josh Hermsmeyer, and the formula is public:
WOPR = (1.5 × target share) + (0.7 × air yards share)
Two worked examples:
- Receiver A: 26% target share, 18% air yards share.
(1.5 × 0.26) + (0.7 × 0.18) = 0.39 + 0.126 = 0.516 - Receiver B: 22% target share, 30% air yards share.

Receiver A sees more of the passes. Receiver B sees the more valuable ones, and comes out marginally ahead. The weighting says target volume matters more than depth — but not so much more that a true field-stretcher can be dismissed.
Volume vs efficiency, and which one sticks
Volume is stickier week to week than efficiency, and this is the most useful single fact in fantasy football.
Routes run and targets are produced by a system: a play-caller who calls the same concepts, a quarterback with the same reads, a receiver in the same alignment. Change nothing and the numbers repeat. Catch rate, yards per reception and touchdown rate are produced by contested moments — a defender’s angle, a slightly early throw, a ball that bounces off a shoulder pad.
So when you are looking at four weeks of data and trying to decide what carries forward:
- Carries forward well: snap share, route participation, target share, air yards share, red-zone looks.
- Carries forward poorly: catch rate, yards per target, touchdown rate, yards after catch on a small sample.
The corollary is that a receiver whose usage is flat but whose points have collapsed is a buying opportunity, and a receiver whose points are elite on thin usage is a selling opportunity. That inversion is uncomfortable to act on, which is precisely why it stays available.
The touchdown-dependence trap
Here is the comparison that catches most people. Two receivers, two weeks, on offenses that each attempted 35 passes per game — 70 attempts over the span.

Receiver X outscored Receiver Y and it was not close. He is also the one to move on from. Eight targets over two games is a bench role, and three touchdowns on eight targets is a rate no receiver sustains. When the touchdowns stop — and they stop — there is nothing underneath them.
Receiver Y has seen roughly twice the volume with zero scoring luck. His floor is real and his touchdowns are coming, not because of some mystical law of averages but because touchdowns are a roughly proportional function of opportunity, and he has the opportunity.
Share of what? Team pass volume changes everything
Target share is a percentage, and percentages need a denominator. A dominant share of a small pie can be worth less than a modest share of a large one.
Two hypothetical receivers over a full 17-game slate:
- Receiver P is the clear WR1 on a run-first offense that attempts 28 passes per game. His target share is 28%. That is
0.28 × 28 = 7.84targets per game, or about 133 targets across 17 games. - Receiver Q is the second option on a pass-heavy offense that attempts 40 passes per game. His target share is 21%. That is
0.21 × 40 = 8.4targets per game, or about 143 targets.
Receiver P looks like the alpha and Receiver Q looks like a complementary piece, and Receiver Q gets more footballs thrown to him. Team context is not a tiebreaker applied at the end — it is a multiplier applied to everything.
This is also why offensive pace and pass-rate tendencies belong in your process at all. A team that plays fast and throws above expectation inflates every pass-catcher on the roster; a slow, run-leaning team deflates all of them. Both effects are large and both are reasonably predictable from prior seasons and coaching staff.
Red-zone targets are a separate stat
A target at the opponent’s 8-yard line and a target at midfield count the same in target share and they are not the same thing. Inside the 20 the field compresses, throwing windows shrink, and offenses narrow their reads to the two or three players they trust — which is often not the same set as the ones getting volume between the 20s.
That makes red-zone target share a genuinely independent signal, and one of the few places where a low-volume player can carry real fantasy value. A receiver at 14% overall target share who commands 30% of his team’s red-zone looks is a different proposition from one at 14% with nothing near the goal line. Where target share fits in the funnel
Target share sits third in the chain. Snaps come first, then routes, then targets, then catches. Each stage filters the one before it, and skipping a stage is how you end up rostering a tight end who plays every snap and blocks on most of them.
The stage directly above target share is the one people skip most often. A receiver’s target share can look thin simply because he is not on the field for passing downs — which is a route problem, not a targeting problem, and it has completely different implications. Route participation separates them, and targets per route run measures how often the ball finds a player when he actually runs.
For betting, the same numbers do different work. A receptions or receiving-yards line is a projection of volume and depth, which is exactly what target share and aDOT describe — the connection is direct enough that player props from a usage angle is mostly this article applied to a posted number. One last habit: when you compute a target share, write down the number of games it came from.
